IITA Hotel: IITA, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, is located at Ibadan, Nigeria. Much of its 1000-hectare campus is used for scientific research on improving food production in Africa. IITA is one of the 15 Centers of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), dedicated to research and promotion of sustainable agriculture, to obtain food security in developing countries.

A third of the campus consists of unspoiled tropical forest, a natural preserve for birds and other fauna. A lake about 3 km long, developed to provide irrigation water, attracts hundreds of species of resident and migratory birds. The lake has been spawned with various fish species and is a lodestone for anglers. Guides are available for visitors wishing to take a tour of the forest, try their luck at angling in the lake, or watching for rare migrating birds.

I-House, with its 108 well-appointed rooms, spacious dormitory facilities, and a conference hall is an ideal venue for organizing workshops, retreats, team building exercises, or a relaxing weekend with the family.

They can go fishing or just stroll around the lake. Less active visitors can kick back at the pool or in one of our bars. In short, IITA hotel offers the perfect atmosphere for a pleasant experience.

IITA Conference Center: IITA Conference Center is a modern, air-conditioned, well designed and equipped venue with high ceiling and ample parking space, suitable for international conferences, training workshops, seminars, and large meetings. It provides professional and high standard conference management services to diverse special interest groups. It has a comfortable seating capacity for a maximum of 300 persons, and a small business center with internet access and photocopying and other administrative services. The unique layout allows for flexible seating arrangements. The center is equipped with a huge screen and powerful presentation projector, public address system, translation booths and recording equipment, print and reprographic machines, display panels, all under a perfect cooling and lighting atmosphere. There are also three small break-out meeting rooms. Each takes up to 10 delegates.

Leading the Fight against Plant Diseases in Nigeria

PSN is a scientific organisation devoted to the study of plant diseases and their control. The objectives of our Society are:

1. To encourage and support research and education in plant pathology

2. To promote public awareness of the importance of plant diseases and of the socio-economic benefits of controlling them

3. To bring together all stakeholders to discuss policies and strategies affecting crop improvement.

The Society, formerly known as the "Nigerian Phytopathological Society (NPS)" was officially inaugurated on October 18, 2011 during the first annual conference on October 17 - 20, 2011 at the International Institute of Tropical Agricultural, Ibadan. The second annual conference followed from September 17 - 20, 2012, at the same venue. The Society was officially incorporated with the Corporate Affairs Commission on April 17, 2013 with incorporation number: CAC/IT/NO 60647.The Society inaugurated/held the first Annual Conference of its Northern Chapter from 12-14 June, 2013 at the Umaru Musa Yar'adua University, Katsina. The University of Ibadan hosted the society for its 2014 Annual conference 13 - 16 October. We are now preparing for our 2024 Annual conference at IITA-Ibadan from 8 - 10 April 2024. PSN seeks to organise scientific meetings such as this annual conference, collaborate with donor agencies to support members travel, student bursaries, short term visiting fellowships fellowship and very creative projects. PSN provides

information on latest developments and research advances in plant health science through its journals; the Journal of Phytopathology and Plant Health (ISSN:2315-9901) and the Journal of Plant Disease (ISSN: 2651-5768). PSN seeks to advocate and participate in the exchange of plant health information with public policy makers, and the larger scientific community; and provides opportunities for scientific communication, collaborations, and professional development.

British Society for Plant Pathology (BSPP)

https://www.bspp.org.uk/

The British Society for Plant Pathology (BSPP) was founded in 1981 for the study and advancement of plant pathology. The BSPP welcomes members from all over the world and from all branches of plant pathology. We support the professional interests of plant pathologists worldwide and provide information and communicate with our members via a newsletter, website and annual meeting. We organise regular scientific meetings, edit three international pathology journals and make funds available to members for both travel expenses and short term undergraduate and masters level studentships.

The Goals

  1. A voice for Plant Pathology
Represent our membership on plant pathology issues at both policy level and through increased public awareness.

  2. A thriving research and knowledge exchange community of plant pathologists
Support Plant Pathology research and enable knowledge exchange and dissemination

  3. Enhancing the impact of plant pathology
Increase engagement between researchers, policy and practice in plant pathology to enhance impact

  4. Strengthen BSPP through enhanced membership & diversity
Welcome and empower plant pathologists from all backgrounds, career-stages and corners of the world.

  1. Promote careers and training in plant pathology
Promote training and career development at all levels and foster a new generation of plant pathologists.

IITA-Germplasm Health Unit

https://www.iita.org/research/facilities/germplasm-health-unit/

The Germplasm Health Unit (GHU) in IITA-Ibadan is tasked with maintaining plant health in line with various international standards. It is responsible for implementing the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), notices from the Inter-African Phytosanitary Council (IAPSC), NPPOs regulations, and all recommendations from international agricultural research centers. The GHU primarily enables movement of germplasm between countries. It ensures the production of good quality and healthy plants by intercepting and guarding against the introduction of exotic seed-borne pests or races of pathogens. It also prevents the international spread of these pests to Pest Free Areas (PFA) in collaborating countries. The GHU’s activities are broken down into services, research, and matters of compliance. It has two laboratories with several major equipment.

GHU Services

The GHU inspects and certifies crops in the fields, screenhouses, and containment for multiplication, regeneration, post-entry crop certification, and pre-shipment certification. It performs diagnostic tests on plant and seed samples, in collaboration with the Virology Unit, and performs plant and seed treatments.

The GHU provides information on the origin of the germplasm and a list of the target pests for which it was inspected or tested for, and any treatments applied on the consignment while in the field or postharvest. The unit obtains import and export documents from the national Plant Quarantine Services (PQS). It registers all import and export consignments at PQS, and delivers and collects consignments.

GHU provides diagnostic services to all IITA scientists and scientists from other centers located within the IITA stations. It assists the Genetic Resources Center in health testing rejuvenated germplasm material grown in the screenhouses. The GHU enhances the acceptance of germplasm material derived from IITA mandate crops by providing quick detection and timely reporting of pests on germplasm material destined for international distribution.

Research Mandate

The GHU conducts some research to determine the pathogenicity of symptoms observed in the fields and puts together the characterization of symptoms. The GHU studies seed treatment tests for the control of seed- borne pathogens as requested by importing countries and also researches pathogenic fungi and bacteria detected on export germplasm in the field and laboratory. The unit works to test the efficacy and evaluation of various fungicides for the eradication of microorganisms on germplasm.

The unit sets tolerance levels for pathogen infection and identifies and determines the causal organisms detected in the field. It looks at the biology and biocontrol of seed-borne pathogens. It determines the nature of the propagules and transmission of seed-borne fungi and bacteria. Finally it is integral in the identification of PFAs for multiplication on each mandate crop.

Compliance to International Regulations

The GHU guards against the introduction of exotic pests and new virulent forms of existing pests into unaffected countries. The unit helps scientists to safely exchange plant materials by implementing IPPC, IAPSC, and IARC recommendations on plant health standards for the international exchange of germplasm. It ensures that germplasm consignments for export from, or imported to, IITA are neither infested nor infected by pests, in particularly those of quarantine importance. The GHU implements import and export requirements of collaborating countries. Phytosanitary certificates are also obtained from the NPQS by the GHU to cover lines, genotypes, accessions and other crop types distributed to various countries worldwide.
